As students grow older, they are expected to develop more advanced vocabularies and demonstrate this through their writing. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve seen feedback sheets come back with excellent grades, but with one familiar area for improvement: vocabulary. Using a thesaurus is a simple way to boost your vocabulary and enhance your writing.
A thesaurus is a synonym dictionary. You simply look up the word you’d like to replace, and the thesaurus will list words you can interchange with that source word. It is a simple concept, but there are some traps to avoid. Using a thesaurus incorrectly can undermine the meaning of your writing and even destroy the meaning completely!
I have put together a short video explaining how to use a thesaurus effectively. I hope you find it helpful as you develop your writing vocabulary!
